Posting an External Link

Blackboard provides an easy way to post links to external sites that you use in your course. Below are steps detailing how to post an external link on your Blackboard course site.

  1. Log into Blackboard and proceed to your course site
  2. Proceed into your Control Panel and click one of the links under the Content Areas heading, for example External Links
  3. Click the Add External Link button
  4. In the Name field, type the name of the webpage or site that you are linking to (see picture below)
  5. In the URL field, type the full web address of the page you wish to link to (including the http:// at the beginning)
  6. Scroll down to the Options section
  7. Check off Yes in the Open in New Window section
  8. Scroll down and click the Submit button

Note: If the link you are adding has a space in it, or another character such as an apostrophe, you may have to add code to the link. For example,in the URL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton's_law; instead of an apostrophe, you would add %27 (i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_law). If the URL had a space in it, you would add %20 where the space would be. If you do not change this character, Blackboard will only send the URL text prior to the space or apostrophe, resulting in a dead link.
