Using the Early Warning System

Early Warning System allows an instructor to create rules for their course and generate warning e-mails to be sent to students if they fail to meet expectations. For example, if the student receives below a certain grade on a Blackboard quiz, a warning will be generated if a grade rule exists. Here are some steps for using the Early Warning System.

Setting up a Rule

  1. Log into Blackboard and proceed to your course site
  2. Click on the Control Panel link
  3. Click on Early Warning System in the Assessment section
  4. There are three different types of rules: Grade, Due Date, and Last Access. Click on the button for the rule that fits your needs
  5. Enter a name for your rule in the Rule Name text field
  6. Enter the specifics of your rule in the Rule Criteria section. For example, for a Grade Rule, you will specify the Gradebook item and whether it is greater than, less than or equal to a specific score
  7. Click the Submit button

Using a Rule

  1. Once your rule is set up, click on the link for your rule to check whether any students satisfy the requirements to generate a warning
  2. If no data shows up, click Refresh This Rule
  3. Look in the column labeled Meets Criteria, if a Yes appears, then you can generate a warning e-mail for the student
  4. Check the radio box next to each student that you wish to send the warning to, then select Student Users Only from the drop down menu in the top right-hand corner
  5. Click the Go button
  6. This will generate the e-mail. Change the text of the e-mail if you wish, and then click the Submit button
